We recommend checking out our step-by-step guide:

Customize Your Barcode Design

We support both 1D barcodes and 2D barcodes (QR codes) and provide a variety of label templates in different sizes, so you can choose what works best for you. You can fully customize your barcode labels—change the font size, make text bold, and more.

Here are some details you can include on your labels. BoxHero will automatically pull the corresponding item information when you print:

  • Item Name : {{name}}

  • SKU : {{sku}}

  • Barcode : {{barcode}}

  • Attribute : {{size, color, etc.}}

Note: If you're printing barcodes by SKU, make sure to change the barcode field from {{barcode}} to {{sku}}.

Mobile Barcode Printing

You can print barcode labels straight from your phone by following these steps:

  1. From the home screen, select Print Barcode.

  2. Choose your label design and the item you want to print.

  3. Hit the Print button and select your printer.

Printer and Paper Options

BoxHero’s barcode printing works with all kinds of printers and paper.

Standard Printer

For standard printers, you can use A4 label sheets (sticker type) to print your barcodes. These are widely available at stationery stores or online, and our system supports labels from well-known brands like Formtec and Avery.

We've already preloaded the dimensions for commonly used label sheets on BoxHero, so you can select the paper type and start printing without having to manually adjust anything.

Thermal Transfer Printer / Direct Thermal Printer

BoxHero also works with thermal transfer and direct thermal printers, such as TSC and Zebra. If you're looking for something more budget-friendly, XPrinter offers affordable options as well.

After connecting the printer to your computer, set the paper size in your computer settings (Control Panel > Printer Properties). Then, load the thermal transfer or direct thermal label sheets into the printer, and you’re all set.

Make sure to check that the labels are compatible with your specific printer model. We also recommend reviewing your printer’s user manual for detailed instructions.

Troubleshooting

Barcode Orientation Issues

If the printout does not match the paper size, it can result in the barcode printing in a rotated position (printing sideways or at a 90-degree angle). Please go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Printer Properties to set the default paper size correctly.

Barcode or QR Code Appears in Red

If the barcode or QR code appears in red, it means there is an unprintable barcode value. Please check that the values set in the barcode field are either numeric or alphanumeric.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which printer is best for printing barcodes?

BoxHero is compatible with any printer, so you can choose one based on your budget and brand preference. Zebra and Bixolon are great options in the $200-500 range, while XPrinter offers more affordable choices under $100, though the print quality may not be as high.

If your budget allows, we highly recommend using a thermal transfer printer for clean, durable, long-lasting barcode labels. The Zebra ZD421t is one of our top picks!

What barcode formats does BoxHero support?

BoxHero auto-generates random barcode numbers that are compatible with the EAN13. When printing, you can select the barcode format in the design details of your template.

Our system supports the following barcode formats: Code128 (default for optimal compatibility), Code39, Code93, EAN13, ITF, and STF.

If you need additional barcode formats, please contact our customer support team.

Can I add an image or logo to my barcode labels?

You can request a custom label design through the Request for Custom Label Template page.
